Coming to America’ actor, John Amos is dead
Mr John Amos, best known for his roles on Good Times, Roots and Coming to America, has died. He was 84.
His son, K.C. Amos, confirmed that the actor died of natural causes on August 21 in Los Angeles.
“It is with heartfelt sadness that I share with you that my father has transitioned,” K.C. wrote. “He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold… and he was loved the world over.”
Born in Newark, New Jersey in 1939, Amos initially pursued a career in football, playing at Colorado State University before a brief stint with the Kansas City Chiefs.
His acting career took off in 1970 with appearances on The Cosby Show and The Tim Conway Comedy Hour. He gained fame as Gordy the weatherman on The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
Amos starred as James Evans Sr. in Good Times, one of the first shows to portray a Black two-parent family on television.
His role as Kunta Kinte in Roots earned him an Emmy nomination and was a defining moment in his career.
