PRESS STATEMENT

The invasion of the court premises and court rooms by thugs and a faction of APC is condemnable and despicable.

During the said Gestapo-style invasion which took place on Friday, May 11, heavily armed SARS operatives watched APC Party Members lock the gates to the court as early as 6 AM in an attempt to stop the courts from sitting.

They shot sporadically into the air, causing commotion in the court. Vehicles parked within the court premises were vandalized wantonly, while people, including lawyers were attacked physically and inflicted with injuries.

The invaders in the presence of SARS Police damaged several courtrooms, ransacked the court library, destroyed vehicles and looted shops.

It is unfortunate that the APC Party factional Leaders and Members connived to close a court and stop it from dispensing justice to Rivers people.

We are worried over the threats which the desperate struggle for political power by the folks in APC has constituted to democracy.

The invasion of court premises to attack people, including judicial workers and litigants is reminiscent of the period of the administration of Amaechi as governor when the court was invaded at will by agents and loyalists of the then governor.

Incidentally, it is the same agents of Amaechi who are said to have invaded the court on Friday, May 11, 2018.

We condemn this act of rascality.

The court is the last hope of common man and should not be turned into a political punching ground for disgruntled politicians and their agents.

We further condemn the actions and inactions of security operatives, especially the Police whose duty it is to maintain law and order.

We demand the Nigerian authority to fish out those involved in the invasion as well as their sponsors for prosecution. Those who desecrated the temple of justice should not be allowed to go scot-free.

We further demand the caution of SARS as it has become a tool of oppression and aggression in the hands of disgruntled desperate politicians.
