Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate death of a 34-year-old Chinonso Omeh of Umuogboagu community in Enugu-Ezike Igboeze North Local Government Area of Enugu State has revealed that the deceased had a terminal illness which manifested while in custody at the defunct SARS office Awkuzu now the State Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Oyi local government area of Anambra State.

The late Chinonso Omeh who was in custody on the account of plotting with other two accomplices to kidnap one Chief Mike Emerah, owner of MacDons Foods slumped in the cell due to his terminal illness and was immediately rushed to a hospital by police operatives where he responded to treatments on the same day, only to kick the bucket 24 hours later as confirmed by the medical doctor on duty.

According to Daily Independent, the former SARS office at Awkuzu took the responsibility for late Chinonso Omeh’s hospital bills with the hope that he was recuperating only for the police to be informed thereafter that he had given up the ghost and the medical doctor directed that his remains be taken to the mortuary.

Prior to his death, Chinonso Omeh had no injuries on his body and the autopsy conducted on his body did not reveal any bullet wounds. His body was thereafter preserved and presented to family members on request.

Investigations also revealed that there was no replacement of Chinonso Omeh’s corpse with the corpse of a 70-year-old man as erroneously captured in some online publications.

A source said, ”The person that died is the same person we took to the mortuary. He was a young man of 34 years and Omeh Chinonso was his name. He did not die in the cell.

“He only collapsed and we quickly rushed him to the hospital. And on that very day we took him to the hospital, the doctor called us and told us that he was responding to treatments. That was around 3 pm.

So it was the following day the doctor called us and said this person has given up the ghost; that we should come and carry our corpse. We took him to the mortuary. He did not die in the cell. He died at the hospital and the name of the hospital is St. Vincent hospital in Achalla Awka-North local government area. “

When the said Chinonso Omeh died, none of his relatives or family members came to the defunct SARS office at Awkuzu to make inquiries about his remains instead they approached zone 13 of the Nigeria Police at Ukpo Dunukofia local government area where they involved the AIG and some police officers were detained for 6 days at the zonal headquarters because of the matter.

The source said it was a case of conspiracy and threat to kidnap one Chief Mike Emerah owner of MacDons Foods and set his company ablaze. The source disclosed that Chief Mike Emerah had laid off some staff early this year over theft and incompetence but three of them who were the late Chinonso Omeh and two others conspired with hoodlums to abduct the business mogul.

The said business mogul got a wind of the kidnap plot through a staff of his and late Chinonso Omeh was arrested by the police and he confessed to having initiated the plan to kidnap Chief Mike Emerah whom he said refused to pay him 4 months salary amounting to N200,000.

The source added, ”We don’t know he was sick when we arrested him because he was looking very healthy. He was brought to our office on 17th February and on 27th February, he slumped and we quickly rushed him to the hospital. The doctor later called us and said he was responding to treatments.

“But it was so unfortunate that on 28th February around 6 am the same doctor called us and said the person we brought has given up the ghost and we should come and carry our property.

Right there in the mortuary, an autopsy was conducted and it was discovered that he died of a terminal ailment. There was nothing like gunshots on his body. Though while he was in detention, no family member came to our office to see him and whenever he tried to reach them on phone their numbers are not available. “
Even though the source tried to exonerate the police saying that operatives at the defunct SARS office Awkuzu had no hand in the death of Chinonso Omeh and that his corpse was not tampered with nor replaced with another corpse, a section of the online media has it that the family of late Chinonso Omeh is seeking justice on the allegation that their brother died in police custody and his corpse allegedly replaced even as police established the fact that late Chinonso Omeh confessed to the crime of having masterminded the plot to kidnap Chief Mike Emerah who was his employer but the plot failed following police rapid response to the situation.
