CAF confirms deaths, injuries of supporters at stadium during AFCON

The Confédération Africaine de Football or Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed the death, as well as injuries, of supporters at Olembe Stadium during the ongoing TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) fixture between hosts Cameroon and Comoros on January 24, 2022, in Cameroon.

This was contained in a press release issued by CAF Communication Department late Monday.

In the statement, CAF expressed awareness of the incident that took place at Olembe Stadium during the match.

The football umpire said that it is currently investigating the situation and trying to get more details on what transpired.

“We are in constant communication with Cameroon government and the Local Organizing Committee.

“Tonight, the CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe sent the General Secretary, Veron Mosengo-Omba to visit the supporters in hospital in Yaoundé,” the statement said.

CAF is the governing body of African football and was founded in 1957.

The founding members are Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia and South Africa.

With a membership of 54 Member Associations, the secretariat is based in Egypt.
