Former President Muhammadu Buhari has raised concern over Nigeria’s unchecked population growth, warning that it could lead to significant challenges for future generations.

Addressing newsmen after participating in Eid prayers alongside Emir of Daura, Dr. Faruk Umar Faruk, Buhari stressed the need for adequate awareness and dialogue on the issue.

Buhari acknowledged the positive trend of Nigerians engaging in agriculture to boost food production and stabilize prices.

He noted the urgency of tackling uncontrolled population growth, describing it as a critical concern.

“I urge all citizens to strive for self-reliance by supporting local agriculture. We have demonstrated our capability in this regard, and we must sustain these efforts, especially amidst rising prices,” Buhari stated.

While reflecting on the festive atmosphere in Daura, Buhari reaffirmed the necessity for national discussions on population management and increased investments in education and healthcare.

“In the spirit of Eid, let us extend support to one another and uphold our collective responsibility as citizens,” he urged.

Buhari also commended the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for its role in national unity and development, reaffirming its significance as one of the lasting legacies of former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon.

As part of his annual tradition, he presented a cow, 10 bags of rice, and financial support to NYSC members marking the occasion.

The former president’s remarks underscored a dual message of agricultural self-sufficiency and responsible population management, resonating with ongoing national priorities amidst economic challenges.
