Buhari assumes presidency of Pan-African Agency of Great Green Wall

President Muhammadu Buhari has assumed the presidency of the Conference of Heads of States and Government of the Pan-African Agency of the Great Green Wall (PAGGW), for the next two years.

In a press release that the president personally signed, he expressed his deep appreciation to the Conference for the confidence reposed in Nigeria to pilot the affairs of the Agency

He also expressed gratitude to Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, who has been running the affairs of the Conference of Heads of State and Government of PAGGW since its inception

Buhari said that Nigeria’s Presidency of the Pan African Agency of the Great Green Wall (PAGGW) will strengthen efforts in the mobilization of resources to accomplish the goals in the PAGGW’s Priority Investment Plan.

He further noted that Nigeria is committed to implementing the Great Green Wall Programme, which is a far-reaching intervention that will restore and rehabilitate lands, sustain rural economies and the livelihoods of Nigeria citizens, promote food security and generate employment.

He however assured that, working together shall restore the degraded ecosystems and endeavour to ensure that the resilience of the people is strengthened against the effects of climate change.

The statement read, “Pleased to announce that on Thursday December 2, 2021, on behalf of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I assumed the Presidency of the Conference of Heads of State and Government of the Pan-African Agency of the Great Green Wall (PAGGW), for the next two years.

“We are grateful to the Conference for the confidence reposed in Nigeria to preside over the affairs of the Agency, for the next two years.

“I also sincerely appreciate the uncommon commitment of His Excellency Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, who has steered of the affairs of the Conference of Heads of State and Government of PAGGW since its inception.

“Among other things Nigeria’s Presidency of the Pan African Agency of the Great Green Wall (PAGGW) shall seek to strengthen efforts in the mobilization of resources to accomplish the goals in the PAGGW’s Priority Investment Plan.

“We are equally committed to implementing the Nigerian Great Green Wall Programme, which is a far-reaching intervention that will restore and rehabilitate lands, sustain rural economies and the livelihoods of our citizens, promote food security and generate employment.

“I assure that, working together, we shall restore our degraded ecosystems and endeavour to ensure that the resilience of our people is strengthened against the effects of climate change.
