The Supreme Court of Nigeria has, on Friday, affirmed Okezie Ikpeazu as the legitimate governor of Abia State.

In June 2016, a Federal High Court, sitting in Abuja, had annulled the election of Ikpeazu on some technical grounds.

According to the court, Ikpeazu was guilty of tax evasion and was therefore unqualified to have contested the 2015 governorship election in the state.

It, therefore, ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission [INEC] to issue a certificate of return to Samson Ogah.

Samson Ogah, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party [PDP] had contested the governorship ticket with the governor.

The court also ordered the governor to vacate office immediately, and hand over to Ogah, who came second in the PDP governorship primaries in Abia.

Following that ruling, Ikpeazu appealed the case.

He won his case at the Appeal court and the judgment has now been affirmed at the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court panel led by Chief Justice Walter Onnoghen held that Ikpeazu could not be held responsible for the discrepancies in his tax documents because there were given to him by the state.

It then dismissed the ruling of the High Court and upheld the Appeal Court’s ruling.
