BREAKING: Hundreds of Boko Haram fighters escape from Niger prison

Koutoukalé prison

Hundreds of terrorists, criminals and drug traffickers have reportedly escaped from the Koutoukalé prison in the junta controlled Niger Republic.

The prison, located near the capital city of Niamey, was the scene of a violent mutiny on Thursday that overwhelmed security guards and allowed inmates to escape with weapons and vehicles.

According to reports, gunshots and explosions were heard inside the prison around midday, which prompted a swift response from security forces.

However, the inmates had already gained control of the prison, breaking through armored gates, barbed wire, and trenches.

It was gathered that two previous attempts by terrorists to attack the prison had been thwarted.

The country’s Interior Minister reportedly issued a radio message to all governors, confirming the escape and urging village heads and religious leaders to report any suspicious individuals.

A curfew has also been declared in the Tillabéri region, and the entire River Niger region is on high alert.

Meanwhile, the escape is considered a major security breach, and authorities are working to recapture the fleeing inmates. The public has been warned to be vigilant and report any information that could aid in the recapture of the escaped prisoners.
