Imo born human rights activist and author, Comrade Paul Ikechukwu Njoku says, the church should be blamed for the spike in domestic violence and abusive marriages in Nigeria.

Paul was reacting to the unfortunate death of gospel singer, Osinachi Nwachukwu, who reportedly died in Abuja hospital as a result of domestic violence.

Osinachi’s sister, identified as Ms Favour Made, confirmed the reports on Sunday, saying that Osinachi died as a result of a cluster of blood in the chest.

According to the sister, the late “Ekwueme crooner” suffered from a blood clot after the kicking she received from her abusive husband, Peter Nwachukwu

Meanwhile, Paul who condemned the death of Osinachi also urged the churches to review what he described as “obnoxious, deceitful, imaginary and uncomplimentary bondages and imprisonment called marital vows”

He said most women are dying in bloody and abusive marriages but too scared to leave because of what people will say.

Paul said, “The church must be held responsible for the numerous deaths linked to the incessant but abusive and violent marriages in Nigeria.

“The clergy compel people to make marital vows on the altar saying, ‘I do”, “for better for worst”, “till death do us part”.

“It is time for the church to rise up and review such obnoxious, deceitful, imaginary and uncomplimentary bondages and imprisonment call marital vows.

“Most of our women are dying in bloody and abusive marriages because of what people will say or because the church forbid it.

“The church is guilty even as the sacramental theology permits separation and dissolution of marriages especially when life is threatened. Yet, many clergy advise tenacity in abusive and violent marriages.”

Activist Paul on the other hand, also blamed the police and the judiciary for their nonchalant attitude in tackling the issue of domestic violence in the country.

He however, urged women to exit any marriage or relationship that could stand as a threat to their lives.
