2003. A private jet touched down the US soil ferrying $170,000 in a concealed purple bag. The money was confiscated as the owner could not prove it as proceeds of legitimate earnings.

Andy Ubah had accompanied the then President Obasanjo to a United Nation’s meeting and sought to launder money under the guise of diplomatic immunity.

5 years later, the same man tried smuggling $135,000 into the UK and was nabbed. He was barred from entering the UK and since 2011, Andy has tried unsuccessfully to overturn that decision.

The impunity of the Uba brothers under the Obasanjo Presidency is well documented. They abducted Chris Ngige and forced him to sign a dated resignation letter for failing to hand over the state coffers to them.

When Obi took over, Andy, used his position in the Presidency to make life unbearable for Peter. He corralled Mike Balonwu and his colleagues to impeach Peter Obi from the comforts of Grand Hotel Asaba.

But for the Supreme Court that thwarted his ambition 16 days after he seized the governorship reins in Anambra, the Uba brothers had succeeded in pocketing Anambra.

Anambra has made steady progress since the Peter Obi days. I can’t shake off the feeling that a return to the Uba days will spell doom for a state that has fought off godfatherism. In an election with first rate intellectuals like Soludo and Val Ozigbo, a misfit like Andy Ubah, should take a back bench.
