Gunmen suspected to be terror bandits attacked the mother of Taraba State governor, Jumai Kefas, and his sister, Atsi Kefas.

The attack NewsBand gathered, occurred along Kente Road in Wukari Local Government Area of the State on Thursday.

Security expert, Mr Zagazola Makama while quoting intelligence sources reports that during the attack, a police officer assigned to escort the family accidentally shot Atsi Kefas while attempting to fend off the criminals.

The family was traveling through the area, which has seen a rise in bandit activities when the terrorists struck.

However, confirming the unfortunate attack on Friday, Dauda Agbu, Chairperson of Wukari Local Government Area, described it as “deeply troubling” but noted that no lives were lost.

“Miss Atsi Kefas sustained a gunshot wound and was initially treated at the Federal Teaching Hospital in Wukari. Her condition was stabilised before she was airlifted to Abuja for further medical attention,” he stated.

Agbu also called for calm, assuring residents that security operatives are working to arrest those responsible for the attack.

Also, the spokesman of the command in Taraba, Usman Abdullahi, confirmed receiving a report of a robbery along the Wukari-Kente road.

He noted that the initial report did not specify that the victims were relatives of the governor.

“Yes, we received a report of a robbery attack on the Wukari-Kente road in the early hours of yesterday, but I can’t confirm whether the governor’s mother and sister were among the victims. The incident is under investigation, and efforts are ongoing to bring the perpetrators to justice,” Abdullahi said.

Meanwhile, the State government is yet to issue a statement in respect to the development.
