Customers of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) living in Dawaki axis in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory have decried the deplorable power supply presently available in the area.

The residents made this known during their Dawaki well-being meeting held over the weekend in Abuja.

According to the summary of the meeting, which started at about 08:45 hours solely on the poor Dawaki power supply since 2021, the residents identified some of the Dawaki power issues and proffered the way forward.

The major issues as captured during the meeting are as follows:

  • Near nonexistence of power supply in Dawaki.
  • Generators are replacing AEDC as the primary source of electricity while AEDC is now the “standby” source of electricity supply.
  • Fluctuating power voltage when there is power supply.
  • Damages to appliances as a result of power fluctuation. (A resident recounted how his 65″ LG TV set blew up due to power fluctuations.)
  • Very high cost of alternative power supply diesel now sold at N760 per liter.
  • Loss of perishable food as a result of lack of electricity.
  • The continual placement of Dawaki on Band A electricity tariff does not demonstrate value for money.
  • There is very strong indication and speculation that the monthly allocation of electricity to Dawaki has been diverted to elsewhere hence the epileptic power supply and hardship being experienced by residents of Dawaki.
  • Neighboring Districts to Dawaki such as parts of Gwarinpa, Katamkpe Extension and parts of Dutse have constant supply of electricity while Dawaki is in darkness.

As the way forward, the residents agreed to forward letters of complaint to all relevant persons and agencies. The letter would be addressed to the Area Manager AEDC Katamkpe and copied to:

  1. The MD AEDC
  2. The GM AEDC Commercial
  3. The CEO TCN
  4. Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC).
  5. The Honorable Minister of Power
  6. The Perm. Sec. Ministry of Power
  7. The Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) Forum Gwarimpa.
  8. The Ordinary President Brekete Family.

They demanded for the immediate restoration of Dawaki Power Supply to the way it used to be and vowed to approach NERC Forum for intervention.

They encouraged as many residents as possible to join and identify with the project and to go as far as organizing peaceful demonstrations to AEDC Head Office, TCN Head Office and Ministry of Power.

Continual transmission of letters and information on the state of electricity to AEDC, TCN social media handles will also be undertaken.

They urged the Executive and members of all the estate associations in Dawaki to key into the project, as well as lawyers, journalists and media houses.

The residents, who are currently planning massive action against AEDC, said they are exploring the grounds and cost of possible legal action against those depriving us of electricity.

Meanwhile, they are meticulously keeping records of the power supply in the eventuality of complaints and legal action.
