Abiodun vows to elevate olumo rock as Nigeria’s premier tourist hub

Governor Dapo Abiodun recently unveiled plans to transform Olumo Rock into Nigeria’s premier tourism destination. During a Wednesday visit to the site, he stressed his administration’s commitment to unlocking tourism’s untapped economic potential.

Abiodun emphasized the site’s cultural significance, calling it Egbaland’s heritage cornerstone. “This rock bridges our past and present,” he said. “We must preserve it for future generations.”

He revealed that more than 20,000 visitors are expected in 2024, reflecting the area’s increasing appeal and attractiveness.

To meet this rising demand, he committed to targeted upgrades that will enhance facilities, providing a world-class experience. “Tourism isn’t simply about revenue; it serves as a vital tool for economic diversification,” he asserted, citing successful nations thriving through tourism alone.

However, he warned that neglect could erode such landmarks without intentional preservation. “We’re determined to protect Olumo Rock’s legacy while modernizing its appeal,” he stated, promising collaboration with stakeholders to balance conservation with innovation.

Abiodun acknowledged current management efforts but noted opportunities for improvement, vowing to address maintenance gaps and elevate visitor experiences. “I’ve identified areas needing change,” he said. “A comprehensive plan will soon revitalize this treasure.”

Beyond tourism, the governor highlighted progress in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and agriculture, reaffirming his focus on holistic development. “Our achievements span sectors, but tourism now takes priority in our economic agenda,” he added.

The Olumo Rock revitalization aims to position Ogun State as a tourism leader, fostering job creation, cultural pride, and sustainable growth. By blending history with modernity, the project seeks to attract global attention while honoring local traditions.

Residents expressed optimism, with tour guide Kemi Adeyemi noting, “This upgrade will boost livelihoods and showcase our heritage.” Similarly, historian Tunde Ogunwale praised the plan: “Preserving Olumo Rock ensures our stories endure for generations.”

As plans advance, the state government will engage communities to ensure inclusive development. Workshops and funding opportunities for local businesses are also proposed, aligning with broader goals to reduce unemployment.

Governor Abiodun’s vision reflects a strategic shift toward sustainable tourism, mirroring global trends. With focused execution, Olumo Rock could soon rival global landmarks, cementing Ogun State’s place on Nigeria’s cultural and economic map.

The initiative underscores a belief that heritage sites, when nurtured, can drive progress. As Abiodun concluded, “Olumo Rock isn’t just a monument—it’s a beacon of our collective potential.”
