Abia hosts inaugural National U-12, U-15 handball championship

To revitalize grassroots sports and reclaim handball prominence, the Abia State Government, alongside the Handball Federation of Nigeria, launched the inaugural National U-12 and U-15 Handball Championship.

Hosted at Umuahia Township Stadium, the event began on March 18, 2025, and concludes March 29, featuring 16 states.

Governor Dr. Alex Otti’s administration spearheaded this initiative to nurture young talent and boost youth sports participation. During the tournament, State Sports Director Comrade Obioma George highlighted its role in rebuilding Abia’s handball legacy. This historic championship reflects Governor Otti’s commitment to grassroots sports revival,” George stated.

Additionally, he recalled Abia’s golden era dominated by the Valiants team, acknowledging their eventual decline. “Champions don’t reign forever, but this event reignites passion and paves our return to glory,” he asserted.

Meanwhile, excitement surges among players, coaches, and spectators as budding athletes compete fiercely. The tournament not only showcases potential future stars but also strengthens Nigeria’s handball pipeline for international competitions.

As matches unfold, Umuahia Township Stadium buzzes with energy, symbolizing Abia’s renewed dedication to youth development. Through this championship, the state reaffirms its resolve to reclaim sporting excellence and inspire generations.

By prioritizing grassroots engagement, Abia sets a precedent for nationwide sports investment. The event’s success could catalyze similar initiatives, ensuring sustained talent discovery and national pride restoration.

Ultimately, the championship transcends competition, embodying hope and ambition for Nigeria’s sporting future. With focused leadership and strategic planning, Abia State repositions itself as a hub for athletic excellence and youth empowerment.
