A 40-year-old woman identified as Rafiat Sheriff and her seven-year-old daughter, Asisat, have died as a result of gas explosion.
The tragic incident occurred on Saturday night at a residence on Church Street, along Èbúté Road in Ibafo, Ogun State.
According to reports, the explosion occurred around 8:30pm when the woman instructed her daughter to ignite the gas cylinder for their evening meal.
During the process, the cylinder burst into flames, engulfing their apartment in fire.
A neighbour named Abiodun, who witnessed the incident, told the police that the fire rapidly spread throughout the house, leading to the tragic demise of both mother and daughter.
Omolola Odutola, the spokesman for the Ogun State Police Command, confirmed the incident and stated that two other individuals are currently hospitalized, fighting for their lives.
“The incident occurred last night when the mother instructed her seven-year-old daughter to cook. The girl was attempting to light up the gas cylinder when the entire house went up in flames,” Odutola said.
The Director of Fire Service for Ogun State, Fatai Adefala, however, denied any knowledge of a gas explosion and insisted that their fire service was not notified about the incident.
“We have two fire trucks in that area – one in Ibafo and another in Isheri – as well as another stationed at the Redeemed Christian Church of God. There was no gas explosion; I don’t know where you got that information from. They cannot call our staff, and they will not show up,” Adefala clarified.
