Two Nigerian sisters, Aisha Mohammed, 18, and 17-year-old Zainab Mohammed, have lost their lives while swimming at Coney Island beach in Brooklyn, United States of America.

The unfortunate incident reportedly occurred about 8pm on Friday, July 5, 2024.

According to their family, the teenagers ‘just wanted to have their last swim,’ when they sadly drowned.

They had jumped into the ocean for their last swim of the day when they vanished, heartbroken family members told The Post.

Witnesses say it happened when it started raining and everyone on the beach ran for cover by the restrooms. The two teens decided to go back into the ocean.

According to witnesses, a man tried to stop them but he failed. He apparently could not swim.

They were found on the shoreline at 9:15pm and rushed to Coney Island Hospital, where they were pronounced dead, the NYPD said.

“They were just trying to have fun out there,” the girls’ uncle Tahir Mohammed, 48, told The Post. “They thought they were just gonna have their last swim and come out.”

A family member posted their obituary on Facebook.

She wrote, “With heavy hearts, we regret to announce the sudden passing of the two sisters, Aisha Mohammed and Zainab Mohammed, which occurred at Coney Island beach. May their souls rest in peace. Our thoughts and prayers are with their parents, and we pray for Allah’s protection over them. The funeral service will take place at Yankasa Masjid on 1707 Towsend Avenue at 9:30 am. On Tuesday, July 9th.”
