The police and paramedics were called to the Enyobeni tavern to respond to an emergency that has led to the death of at least 17 people, and a few others injured in South Africa.

The incident occurred at a tavern located in East London city, South Africa.

Relatives of the victims are still unable to see the bodies of their loved ones, reports say, and locals have called for the venue to be closed.

Speculations at the tavern suggest exposure to poisonous substances as bodies are described as laying on chairs with ‘no obvious sign of injury.

Eyewitnesses told the Daily Dispatch newspaper that bodies were lying inside the venue as if they had collapsed on the floor, others say there was an alleged stamped inside the tavern.

However, the police have said they will not be given to hearsays and speculation surrounding the tragic incident.

“The incident is still under investigation, we do not want to make any speculations at this stage,” Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana told the Newzroom Africa television channel.
