The National Judo Coach, Bashir Bassey, on Saturday urged coaches and referees to abide by the new rules and regulations of the game. Bashir, an international Judo Federation Coach and Instructor, gave the advice at the ongoing Judo refresher course for coaches and referees in Abuja.

The course, which organised by the Nigeria Judo Federation (NJF), has participants from the 36 states and the para-military.

He said the refresher course was to keep coaches and referees abreast with current rules and regulations of the game.

“The International Olympics Committee (IOC) occasionally calls for and accepts review of rules and regulations covering sports federations both at national and international level.

“These new rules and regulation are what we will work with in the next four years before the Olympics. “We are trying to keep our judo officials abreast with the recent developments in the rules and regulations of the game.

“The course is all about capacity building and reminding ourselves about coaching ethics and moral governing the sports,’’ he said.

Bashir urged the participants to imbibe what they have learnt and be ready to transfer same to the young and upcoming judokas.

“Participants should conceive what is being given them, go home and spread the message of the new rules and forgotten ethics of coaching profession to the young and upcoming judokas,’’ he said.

Bashir said some of the new rules are very technical issues that were addressed in the last congress in Miami in January, saying they had to do with duration of the contest period.  He said the congress also included certain rules and remove certain scores, like what is called `yougo’.  (NAN)
