Ugorji commends NDLEA, shares Governor Uzodimma’s vision

On Tuesday, November 22, 2022, the Imo State Commissioner for Homeland Security and Vigilante Affairs, Dr. Ugorji Okechukwu Ugorji, interacted and interfaced with participants at a drug abuse prevention and management seminar organized by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). The event took place at the City Cruz Hotel, Owerri.
Dr. Ugorji, who has a background in employee and drug counseling, brought greetings and a goodwill message from the governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma.
In his remarks, the Commissioner stated that Imo State has a two-prong approach to mitigating the abuse of illegal drugs: a law enforcement approach, and a health/rehabilitation approach.
While the laws against the possession, use, distribution, and sale of illegal drugs must be enforced with discipline and fairness, Dr. Ugorji said that Governor Uzodimma “believes that those of our citizens who become addicted to drugs deserve chances at rehabilitation and recovery.”
Dr. Ugorji went on to share the news that Governor Uzodimma wants to build three state-of-the-art rehabilitation centers in Imo State – one in each of the three senatorial zones.
“As the governor’s lead agency in the state’s efforts to mitigate the impact of illegal drugs, the Ministry of Homeland Security and Vigilante Affairs has requested funding in its proposed 2023 budget for the actualization of the governor’s vision in this regard,” Ugorji told the participants.
The audience comprised officers drawn from the military and para-military agencies in the state.
A second day of the seminar will be held for secondary school teachers in the state. The seminar aims to train the participants on Evidence-Based Prevention and Management strategies for the Drug Abuse problem currently ravaging the youths of our communities in recent times.
