Scores of students of the University of Benin have been trapped in a three-storey building that collapsed in Ekosodin, an off-campus community dominated by students of the University of Benin.
The area, known for housing students, was thrown into chaos as rescue efforts started shortly after the collapse.
A student who doesn’t want to be quoted, revealed that a university rescue team has successfully pulled out some trapped occupants, many of whom sustained serious injuries and were immediately taken to the hospital for medical care.
However, one student remains trapped under the debris, with rescue teams working tirelessly to locate and extract the victim.
This medium gathered that the victim made a phone call from within the collapsed building, pleading for assistance.
Meanwhile, UNIBEN’s Dean of Students is present at the scene, coordinating rescue efforts in collaboration with the university’s team.
However, at the time of filing this report, the university has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident’s cause or the exact number of those affected.
