In a bold step to tackle rising insecurity and food inflation, governors from Nigeria’s southwest region agreed to form a joint surveillance team and regional food hubs.
These decisions emerged during a meeting of the Southwest Governors’ Forum (SGF) at the Lagos State House in Alausa, Ikeja.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos, who chairs the forum, announced the resolutions in a communique released after the meeting on Thursday.
Governors Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Ademola Adeleke (Osun), and Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti) attended the session.
The joint surveillance team aims to enhance regional security by coordinating efforts across state borders.
Additionally, the food hubs will streamline agricultural distribution to stabilize prices and ensure food availability for residents.
This initiative reflects the governors’ commitment to addressing pressing regional challenges through collaboration and strategic planning.
By pooling resources and expertise, they hope to create a safer and more prosperous southwest.
Joint Surveillance Team to Combat Insecurity
Sanwo-Olu emphasized the need for a joint surveillance team, marking a proactive response to rising insecurity threats in the region.
He characterized these threats as harmful to both peace and stability, making urgent action essential.
The initiative includes appointing special advisors on security in every state.
Additionally, advanced technology, such as aerial surveillance systems, will be deployed to improve overall security operations effectively.
“The forum agreed to appoint special advisors on security in each state.
We will also establish a joint surveillance monitoring team,” Sanwo-Olu stated confidently.
He further explained that intelligence gathering would be bolstered through collaboration among state security operatives, local security networks, and federal enforcement authorities.
