The Nigerian Senate has organized a two-day  Conference to combat the growing trend of cyber crimes and bullying enveloping the Nigerian cyber world.

Tagged “2nd Legislative-Stakeholders Conference On Cybersecurity”, the conference has as its theme: “Cybersecurity: Implications of Disruptive Technologies on National Security and  Economy”.

The conference was held at NAF Conference Center in Abuja on Tuesday, June 26 & Wednesday, June 27, 2018.

Day one of the event saw the Minister of Communication, Barr. Adebayo Shittu deliver the keynote address for the day.

Noting that “cyber space has become a matter of global security concern,”Barr. Shittu said that “large scale attacks, such as  one Europe faced sometimes ago, have evidenced the existence of a new layer to transnational interaction and modern conflict: cyber warfare.”

Ha admitted that “the significance of cyberspace to the economic growth and security of our nation is no longer in doubt” as “globally, most organizations are defining and aligning their roles to the cyberspace in order to continue to be relevant in their contents.”

He, however, stressed that International treaties and cybercrime laws ensure that “cyberspace is not simply a jungle where the strong do what they want and the weak suffer what they must.”

Shittu demanded some checks and balances to enthrone justice and equity in the cyber world.

President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, DG National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen Tukur Buratai, Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Gabriel Olonisakin, and a host of others were represented at the event.

Present at the event were chairman, Senate Committee on ICT and Cybercrime, Senator Abdulfatai Buhari as well as vice chairman, Senate Committee on ICT and Cybercrime, and chairman, Planning Committee 2018 Cybersecurity Conference, Senator Foster Ogola.

The organizers of the event expressed worries about the rampage of cyber-related crimes and sundry challenges in Nigeria and the rest of the world.

Consequently, the Senate considered a motion titled “Worrisome Dimension of Cyber Attacks and Criminality: Urgent Need for Concerted Efforts to Secure Nigeria’s Cyberspace”.

The Senate, therefore, mandated its Committee on ICT Cybercrime to address the issue in collaboration with relevant stakeholders in the country.

It tasked the Committee to articulate a national and broad-based approach to keeping the country ahead of the challenge, the the conference.

The conference focused on the following areas:

  1. Cyber Diplomacy and Politics
  2. Digital Identity, Digitization and Big Data
  3. Block Chain Technology
  4. Smart Technology, and,
  5. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.
