Welcome to a new Legislative Day in the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria!

Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, led the Principal Officers into the chambers; took the official prayers; and began the day’s proceedings at 10:48am.

Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso moved for the approval of votes and proceedings of Tuesday, 10th April, 2018. Senator Jonah David Jang seconded.

ANNOUNCEMENT

Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, announced that yesterday, we recognized the birthday of our longest-serving Senator and longest-serving Senate President, Senator David Mark but he was not here.

“Today, I believe that it is only right for us to once again congratulate him for the ‘young’ age that he has attained.”- Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki.

“Congratulations sir. We congratulate you for your service to this great country; for your dedication as an Officer and as a Gentleman. Those of us who are politicians are always jealous that you can do both. We can only be gentlemen, we cannot be Officers.”- Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki.

“We wish you many more years of great service. Congratulations sir, on behalf of all the Distinguished Senators of the 8th Senate.”- Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki.

PETITION

Senator Kabiru Gaya raised a petition from staff of National Assembly for the request of entitlements that are yet to be paid by the management. The Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki has instructed for the payment to be made, however, till this day no payment has been made.

Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki referred the petition to the Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions to report back in 2 weeks.

POINT OF ORDER

Senate Leader suspended Order 17 to allow family members, close friends of Late Senator Ali Wakili and former Senators into the Chamber.

Minority Leader seconded the Order cited by Senate Leader.

VALEDICTORY SESSION

The Senate now paid tributes in honour of Late Senator Mustapha Bukar.

Senate Leader, Senator Ahmad Lawan reads the biography of Late Senator Mustapha Bukar and urges the Senate to quickly pass those bills presented by Late Senator Mustapha Bukar to register those bills in his name.

“He came to this Senate with a lot of experience, we are going to miss his contributions and patriotism to this country. He served his people till he passed away. I urge that we pass the bills he sponsored.”- DSP, Ike Ekweremadu.

“He was a  man known for his service to humanity. He was a gentleman, very humble to the core, patriotic and served Nigeria diligently. I am so pained by the demise of this gentleman. May his soul RIP.”- Senator Godswill Akpabio.

“If the World was populated with the likes of Senator Mustapha Bukar, Nigeria would be a better place. All his life in this chamber, nobody has ever had a problem with him. One thing is for sure, we would miss his wise counsel.”- Senator Bala Na’allah.

“May God almighty grant the people of Katsina State and the family of Late Senator Mustapha Bukar the fortitude to bear the loss.”- Senator Philip Aduda.

“May his soul Rest In Peace. He was a great gentleman, always wore a smile on his face, always calm and sought advice from his younger colleagues which shows humility. We pray that as good as he was, the good Lord will overlook his faults and grant him paradise.”- Senator Francis Alimikhena.

“He was a professional and committed to his duties. May God Almighty give his family and we his colleagues the fortitude to bear the loss.”- Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso.

“He was a gentleman, a complete gentleman.”- Senator Umaru Kurfi.

“He was one of the best professional engineers. This is one death that shook me and the whole world. In Senator Mustapha Bukar we have lost an astute gentleman. He was a voice of wisdom. This Senate has lost a great colleague, the people of Katsina State have lost a great legislator.”- Senator Yahaya Abdullahi.

“I am speaking of the death of a man whom I have never met before I came to the Senate, but we developed a good rapport and worked together as though we were born into one family.”- Senator Foster Ogola.

“I condole with the Senate, his family and the people of Daura on this loss. May his soul Rest in Peace.”- Senator Yusuf Yusuf.

“His death affected all of us personally. He has gone to a better place. May his soul Rest in Peace.”- Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe.

“Late Senator Mustapha Bukar has left good legacies behind. I pray he rests in Aljannatu Firdaus.”- Senator Barau Jibrin.

“He was very humble and an easy going legislator. It is unfortunate that we have lost a great man. We pray for his family and that God accepts his soul.”- Senator Nelson Effiong.

“He was a very honoured man. I saw intelligence and humility in him. He was a man who followed due process. He was truly a Distinguished Senator. May his soul Rest in Peace.”- Senator James Manager.

“Late Senator Mustapha Bukar lived a very good life worth emulating. On behalf of my Senatorial district, I pray that Aljannatu Firdaus will be his permanent resting place.”- Senator Ibrahim Gobir.

“He was indeed a Nigerian to the core. Late Senator Mustapha Bukar has finished his assignment here on earth and has returned to God. I bring my heartfelt condolences to Senator Mustapha’s family and Senatorial district. May God comfort all of us.”- Senator Jonah David Jang.

“He lived a life of service and sacrifice. He served with maturity, humility and committed to the mandate given to him. May Allah grant his soul Al Jannah Firdaus.”- Senator Shehu Sani.

“He was a great Nigerian concerned with unity and peace in Nigeria. He spent all his time contributing to infrastructural building of this nation. He did good for his people. May his soul Rest in Peace.”- Senator Clifford Ordia.

“We have lost a great ally and friend. May his soul Rest in Peace.”- Senator Chukwuka Utazi.

“As the Senator representing the President, you would not have known from the way he carried himself. Whenever we interacted, he was always trying to find solutions to problems — and he always worked behind the scenes to do just that.”- Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki.

“I was lucky enough to have met him a long time ago, when I was a banker, and he was still in the Ministry of Water Resources — he showed us back then that he was a real technocrat and he was really sound.”- Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki.

“You could always see from his contributions on the floor of the Senate that he was a highly cerebral man who had a lot of ideas. We have lost a great technocrat in the National Assembly and in the country.”- Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki.

“I pray that the Almighty grants him Al jannah Firdaus, and I also pray that his family is granted the fortitude to face this incredible loss.”- Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki.

Senate resolved to:

  1. Observe a minute silence; and
  2. Revisit the resolution of this Senate on the immortalization of Senators for further legislative actions.
