Shehu Gabam, Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), spoke after meeting with former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai and allies of ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

On Tuesday, reports of the closed-door meeting at the SDP national secretariat led to speculations about a political merger ahead of the 2027 elections.

Gabam disclosed he was open to conversations centered around a better Nigeria. He emphasized the focus on the country’s future, not just political parties.

Gabam stated there is no official statement from El-Rufai or others about joining SDP. They are open to conversations and negotiations for a better Nigeria.

He mentioned looking for like-minded people who believe in the country’s future to work together and uplift Nigeria’s standards.

Gabam noted the media’s attention on El-Rufai and Atiku’s allies. He has received dignitaries from different political parties discussing the way forward.

Gabam emphasized the importance of stabilizing the country and offering productive advice to the government to avoid crises.

He stated that ongoing conversations will lead to a conclusion and an official press conference when the time comes.

Gabam mentioned social gatherings and discussions on national issues at the preliminary stage. More like-minded people are already on board.

He welcomed the development, noting it is a routine part of his office activities. SDP aims to provide decent leadership for Nigeria.

Gabam emphasized the party’s interest in the country’s well-being, aiming for peace, coordination, economic prosperity, and political stability.

He reiterated that SDP’s objective is to play its role as an opposition party, similar to how APC ousted PDP from power.
