Airstrikes launched by the Saudi-led coalition destroyed a missile depot of the Houthi rebels in Yemen’s central province of Marib, a military officer from the Yemeni government said on Tuesday.

The officer, who asked to remain anonymous, said the airstrikes took place on Monday afternoon in Sirwah district in the western part of Marib province.

“The missiles exploded and 20 rebels at the place were killed in the airstrikes,’’ the source added.

Meanwhile, Houthi-run al-Masirah TV reported three airstrikes by the Saudi-led coalition warplanes on Sirwah on Monday, without providing further details.

The Houthi group announced on February a wide offensive to seize control over the oil-rich Marib, the last northern stronghold of the government.

Dozens of fighters from both sides have been killed since then, according to local media.

Yemen has been mired in a civil war since late 2014 when the Iran-backed Houthis seized control of several northern Yemeni provinces and forced the internationally recognised government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi out of the capital Sanaa.

The Saudi-led Arab coalition intervened in the Yemeni conflict in 2015 to support Hadi’s government. (Xinhua/NAN)
