Russia launches more night strikes on Kiev, says it downed 3 drones outside Moscow
As EU imposes 11th round of sanctions against Russia
Russia launched dozens of fresh night attacks on Ukraine’s capital, Kiev, as air raid sirens blarred for several hours during the night while the Iranian-made Shahed drones attacks lasted.
Following the attacks, Ukraine authorities said their air defence systems shot down 28 of the 30 drones in the wake of “another massive air attack on the capital” launched by Russia.
The head of Kyiv military administration, Serhiy Popko, said via Telegram messaging app that about 20 hostile targets were spotted and destroyed in the airspace surrounding Kyiv.
Meanwhile, the military administration of Lviv, a city of approximately 700,000 people located about 70 kilometres (43 miles) from the border with NATO member Poland, reported similar attacks but said that there were no fatalities.
Yuriy Malashko, the chief of the military administration of the Zaporizhzhia region in southeast Ukraine, stated on the Telegram messaging app that Russia’s raid targeted telecommunication infrastructure as well as agriculture and farming facilities.
There were also no fatalities reported in Zaporizhzhia where Russia unleashed seven missiles attacks, according to Malashko.
On its part, Russia says it downed 3 drones outside Moscow, Russia, which it suspected was attack by Ukraine.
The photo below released by Moscow Region Governor Andrei Vorobyev via telegram channel on Wednesday shows the site where a drone crashed, near Kalininets, outside Moscow.
Two drones were reportedly brought down outside Moscow as they approached the warehouses of a local military unit, Vorobyov said.
He claimed it’s part of the latest attempt by Ukraine to strike targets inside Russia during the early stages of Kyiv’s most recent counteroffensive.
The drones came down near the village of Lukino, administratively part of the city of Moscow, Russian media reported.
The wreckage of a third drone was reportedly found about 20 kilometers (12 miles) away. No damage or casualties were reported.
Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed it was “an unsuccessful attempt at a terrorist attack” by “the Kyiv regime” on its facilities in the Moscow region, adding in a statement that all three drones were brought down by electronic jamming.
Ukraine did not confirm any attack on Russian soil but Ukrainian officials have emphasized the country’s right to strike any target in response to Russia’s invasion and war.
Meanwhile, European Union has imposed 11th round of sanctions against Russia.
The Swedish Presidency of the EU Council said Wednesday that EU ambassadors agreed on the 11th package of sanctions against Russia.
“The package includes measures aimed at countering sanctions circumvention and individual listings,” it said on Twitter.
The President of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, welcomed the sanctions package.
Leyen tweeted:
“It will deal a further blow to Putin’s war machine with tightened export restrictions, targeting entities supporting the Kremlin.”
“Our anti-circumvention tool will prevent Russia from getting its hands on sanctioned goods,” she added. Read more.
