The House of Representatives, on Wednesday, agreed to rework the rejected Electoral Act amendment bill and re-transmit same to President Muhammadu Buhari for assent.

The President in a letter sent to both House of Representatives and Senate had rejected the amended electoral bill.

Addressing journalists, the spokesman of the House of Representatives, Hon.  Abdulrazak Namdas said that the lawmakers agreed to rework the bill and re-submit the bill for Mr.  President assent.

He explained that members agreed with the president on two of the three reasons given by the president, but that they did not agree with him on one.

According to Namdas, those are two areas that the National Assembly has no powers to legislate for local governments.

He added that the deletion of two grounds upon which an election may be challenged by candidates unduly limits the rights of candidates in elections.

However, Namdas said that the lawmakers did not agree with the president on his reason that changing elections sequence would affect the constitutional rights of Nigeria’s electoral umpire.

He said Sections 76 of the constitution and 4 of the Legislative Privileges Act give the National Assembly powers to determine elections sequence.
