President Muhammadu Buhari has snubbed former President Olusegun Obasanjo as he named railway stations after some prominent Nigerian citizens.

News of the naming of the railway stations was disclosed by the Minister of Transportation, Mr. Chibuike Amaechi.

Amaechi’s disclosure was contained in a press statement signed by Mr. Eric Ojiekwe, the Director of Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Transportation, in Abuja.

According to Mr. Amaechi, President Buhari had approved the naming of some railway stations along the Lagos-Ibadan and Itakpe/Ajaokuta/ Aladja/Warri corridors after some prominent Nigerian citizens.

According to the statement, for the Lagos-Ibadan with extension to the Lagos Port Complex at Apapa railway station, the beneficiaries are:

  • Bola Ahmed Tinubu (Apapa station)
  • Mobolaji Johnson (Ebute Metta Station)
  • Babatunde Raji Fashola (Agege station),
  • Lateef Jakande (Agbado station), and,
  • Yemi Osinbajo (Kajola station).

Others are:

  • Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti (Papalanto station)
  • Wole Soyinka (Abeokuta station),
  • Aremo Segun Osoba(Olodo station)
  • Chief Ladoka Akintola (Omio-Adio station)
  • Chief Obafemi Awolowo (Ibadan station), and,
  • Chief Alex Ekwueme (Operation Control Centre), et al.

Recall also that reported on Buhari named the Railway Complex in Agbor – the operational hub of Itakpe/Warri Rail Line – after former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Reacting, a former Minister of Aviation and ardent critic of the Buhari administration, Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode faulted the exclusion of former President Obasanjo from the list.

Mr. Fani–Kayode, who was a minister under Obasanjo administration, took to his Twitter handle to condemn Buhari.

He said that the exclusion of Obasanjo from the list of those honored by having railway stations named after them was petty, malicious, spiteful and sacrilegious.

He tweeted:

I believe that the exclusion of OBJ from the list of those honored by having railway stations etc. named after them was petty, malicious, spiteful & sacrilegious.

We must not allow politics to becloud our thinking and judgement and we must give honor to whom it is due.

Equally sad is the fact that Umaru Yar’adua, Ameyo Adadevoh, Shehu Shagari,Tafawa Balewa, TB Joshua, David Oyedepo, Baba Adebanjo, John Nwodo, Emeka Ojukwu, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Matthew Hassan Kukah, Baba Kessington Adebutu & others were also left out.

Give honor to whom it is due!

Other Nigerians react:

Mr. Integrity Flag of Nigeria @AjammaS

Exactly Sir. I was so surprised to see d name of Tinubu & other criminals, but the name of greatest leader in Nigerian history Chief OBJ was excluded. This is not only a slap to South Westerners but a slap to entire Nigeria because Chief OBJ sacrificed a lot to keep Nig together.

NOAH AYANNIYI @AyanniyiNoah

His party was there for 16 years, of which he was part of the 8years of the 16years. If he deserved it that much, they should’ve built one and name it after him…a man who failed to fix a road leading to his state deserves no honour as far as I’m concerned.

CODED AUTOS @Heart4Man

You lack common sense OBJ lay the foundation…the project going on if this Govt didn’t complete does that mean they don’t deserve to be honoured.

Ufuoma FireUfomsFire @ufuoma_ufoms

Obasanjo is arguably the best president Nigeria has ever had.

Adam @iam_garden

Atomicdele @atomicdele

Even Osinbajo got one….very funny government. What has Osinbajo contributed other than being a VP?

Akintayo Akinseloyin @AkintayoAkinse1

Obj should have been jailed for genocide at The Hague. He corrupted the democratic system & institutions with money & was highly vindictive. No part of Yoruba land benefitted from his presidency. Even the road to his Otta farm was messed up while Lagos Ibadam was an eyesore.

Oluwashola Aina @AinaOluwashola

It breaks my heart when I see Yoruba people talk about OBJ in this light. Yorubas are never grateful, so Tinubu is a better leader abi? Go and check the voting pattern, the SW didn’t vote for him.

Grace John @onyiforlife
