Presidential Election Tribunal: NBA President seeks live telecast of proceedings
The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr. Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau (SAN) has called on the 2023 Presidential Election Petition Tribunal to televise live the proceedings of the petition by the opposition parties against the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Alhaji Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Recall that the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Gregory Obi, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, and New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso have all filed petitions challenging the declaration of Tinubu as the president-elect of the election which was held on February 25, 2023, by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
According to Mr. Maikyau, such live broadcast will be in the interest of openness, justice, transparency and trust in the judiciary, The Nation reported.
Section 36 (1) and (3) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria provides that judicial proceedings should be conducted in public.
‘Providing public access to the proceedings would meet the aspirations of the public to participate in the process,’ Maikyau noted. Read more.
