Policeman kills Okada over face mask, arrested [video]

A policeman, on Thursday, July 9, shot a commercial motorcyclist (Okada man), name yet unknown, to death over face mask controversy in Orlu, Imo State.

Our correspondent, who monitored the incident, said that the death of the cyclist resulted in civil unrest within the area.

The ensuing riots resulted in the attack of another policeman, Sergeant Awusu Henry, with matchet by some angry youths.

Vehicular movement was also brought to a halt as the angry youths blockaded the road over the death of the Okada man.

Our correspondent reported that the police checkpoint was notorious for harassing motorist and collecting bribes, “nothing more”, he had said.

Giving an update on the incident, the Imo State police command spokesperson, Orlando Ikeokwu confirmed the development.

Ikeokwu said that the state commissioner of Police, Isaac Akinmoyede, ordered an investigation into the incident.

He said, meanwhile, that the police command has arrested the policeman, an inspector, who shot the cyclist.

According to Ikeokwu, the CP has urged all the parties involved in the matter to remain calm, promising that justice would be served.

Speaking, Ikeokwu said:

“The attention of the command has been drawn to the shooting of a motorcyclist (name yet unknown) by a Police officer in Orlu metropolis, which resulted to the death of the cyclist and the matchetting of one Sergeant Awusu Henry, which has resulted to riots and civil unrest around the metropolis.

“The Commissioner of Police, Imo State, CP Isaac Akinmoyede, has ordered a full-scale investigation into the matter, with a view to unravelling the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident.

“However, the officer responsible for the shooting has been arrested and taken into custody.

“The Command while regretting and condemning this unethical and unprofessional infraction, wish to assure members of the public that justice will be done in this matter.

“The Command, therefore, urges all Imolites especially the people of Orlu and environs to remain calm as no stone will be left unturned in the quest to ensure that justice is done.”
