Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the shooting of a Nigerian man at 2634 Yorktown Street about 7:35pm on Thursday, March 21.

The suspect Keaiirra Shavoiyae Chidozie, 28, is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in the 263rd State District Court.

The victim, 26, was transported to an area hospital in critical condition.

HPD Major Assaults & Family Violence Division Detective D. King said Chidozie told detectives she and her husband (victim) got into an argument that escalated and she started to fear for her safety.

While details around the argument remains sketchy, an account of the events leading up to the tragic incident was given to detectives, and a news release includes a statement from HPD Detective D. King on the matter.

In the statement obtained by the City of Houston news site, Detective King relayed that Chidozie claimed the dispute with her husband escalated to where she feared for her safety.

As she retreated to the bedroom, her husband followed, continuing the argument.

It was then that Chidozie reportedly grabbed a pistol and fired several shots at her spouse.

After the altercation, she left the apartment with their two children.

Responding officers detained Chidozie in the parking lot and placed her under arrest. The charges against her were filed in the 263rd State District Court.

A photo of Chidozie has been released along with the news of her booking. The children involved in this tragic domestic episode were taken into a care of a relative following the incident.
