Police arrest two suspected cable vandals in Lagos

Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) have arrested two suspected cable vandals in different parts of Lagos.

The Police Public Relations Officer of Lagos State Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed this in a press release issued at Ikeja, Lagos, and obtained by News Band.

According to SP Hundeyin, the suspects, Akpan Fortune, aged 28, and Stanley Umebuane, aged 24, were arrested in Ikeja and Ikoyi on Sunday, November 6, 2022.

Fortune was arrested in the morning on Acme Crescent, Agidingbi, Ikeja after allegedly accessing and vandalizing telecommunication and generator cables in a substation in the area.

Umebuane on his part was caught in the act by an RRS team on routine patrol on Sunday night at Gerrard Road, Ikoyi, digging up electricity cables with a shovel.

Recovered from them were a shovel and different types of vandalized cables.

Commander, Rapid Response Squads (RRS), CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi, said that he has transferred the suspects to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti for further investigation and prosecution.

The Rapid Response teams also, on October 31, reported the arrest of cable vandals in Ikoyi, Lagos.

RRS Officials said that they arrested two suspected cable vandals attempting to cut armoured cables in Ikoyi.

The report stated:

“The suspects, Wasiu Olainukan (25) and Habib Rasaq (30), were arrested on Saturday, October 29, 2022 at about 3:45 a.m. while excavating and cutting cables powering street lights in the area.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects, who were arrested with a handsaw and cutting pliers, were labourers on Banana Island.

“The Commander, Rapid Response Squad, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi, also said that he has since transferred the suspects and exhibits to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, for further investigation and prosecution.

In yet another report, operatives of Ijora Badia Division of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested four suspects who specialize in stealing vehicles and dismantling them for onward sales as spare parts.

The suspects, Alafia Afiwajuomo, Ganiyu Tajudeen, Olamilekan Hassan and Lucky Esomojumi were arrested at Igamu under bridge following a painstaking investigation and intelligence gathering that was launched when information was received on the 29/09/2022 that a Toyota Camry was snatched at gunpoint from one Sandra (surname withheld) at Iganmu in Surulere, Lagos.

The car was in the process of being dismantled before it was recovered by the police.
Parts of cars suspected to have been dismantled and sold as spare parts were also recovered at the scene.
