Osun State Gov’t: Court rulings render APC council chairmen positions null

OSOGBO, February 19, 2025 – The Osun State Government has strongly rejected claims from the sacked council officials of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

They labeled these actions as illegal and unfounded.

This reaction follows a press release from Honourable Dosu Babatunde, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

He emphasized that the election leading to these officials’ appointment has been nullified by a valid court ruling.

In his statement, Hon. Babatunde described the actions of the ousted officials as “the theatrics of a gang of jesters.”

He asserted that they currently possess no legal authority over the Local Government Councils in Osun State.

He reiterated that the Federal High Court in Osogbo, in suit number FHC/OS/CS/103/2022, and the Appeal Court in CA/AK/226M/2024 have declared the officials’ positions invalid.

The commissioner remarked, “It is absurd to learn that some individuals gathered and conferred upon themselves what they are not.” This statement highlights the seriousness of the ongoing claims.

Additionally, he condemned the illegal occupation of Local Government Secretariats across the state. He termed these actions a “show of shame,” exposing APC members as “gangsters and lawless characters.”

The commissioner emphasized that the courts have invalidated the October 15, 2022, election, which, in turn, falsely legitimized these officials. Additionally, he pointed out that the actions of these APC chieftains constitute contempt of court.

Moreover, he warned that their illegal activities could ultimately lead to criminal charges for destroying and tampering with public properties. This crucial warning underscores the severity of their actions and the potential consequences they face.

Babatunde stated, “They have violated clear court orders from the APP versus APC suit by illegally occupying the offices.” Consequently, this highlights the blatant disregard these officials have for the legal framework established by the courts.

Furthermore, he urged the illegal group to stop their actions; otherwise, they would inevitably face judicial sanctions that could severely impact their operations. Such consequences would not only disrupt their activities but also serve as a warning to others.

In addition, the Osun State Government strongly encouraged the public to disregard the claims made by these so-called council officials, whom they labeled as manipulative and intent on exploiting state institutions for unlawful gains. As a result, this call to action aims to protect the integrity of local governance.

Finally, the commissioner expressed hope that authorities would soon expose these impostors, ultimately leading to their removal from positions of influence and power. Consequently, this would restore public confidence in legitimate leadership and governance.

As tensions escalate regarding the legitimacy of the APC council candidates, the state government remains committed to upholding the rule of law. By maintaining a firm stance, they seek to ensure that justice prevails in this challenging situation.

They aim to restore the integrity of local governance in Osun State.
