Ohanaeze presents list of 578 Nigerian youths languishing in Benin Republic prisons

Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC) has submitted the list of 578 Nigerian youths who are currently languishing in the Republic of Benin prisons to Public Petition Committee of the National Assembly in Abuja.

The list was submitted by the national President of OYC, comrade Igboayaka O Igboayaka alongside his team.

According to Igboayaka, 578 Nigerian youths were illegally arrested and detained by Republic of Benin in D’Akpro Misserete & Cotonou Prison.

Recall that OYC on 30th April 2023 made a shocking revelation before the Public Petition Committee of the National Assembly that five (5000) thousand Nigerian youths are held captive in 13 different prisons in Republic of Benin.

However, during the second Summon at Public Petition Committee hearing on 23rd May 2024, the House Chairman Public Petition committee Rt. Hon. Mike Etaba adopted the list of 578 detainees from Ohanaeze Youth Council as a working documents that will aid in investigation and possible intervention of federal government into the matter.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs which is the respondent of petition that pleaded for more time on 30th April 2024 during the first summon by public petition committee in order to reach the Benin Republic Government, could not show up on 23rd sitting.

While speaking to the committee, OYC president, Comrade Igboayaka urged the committee to accept the list of 578 detainees as a working documents, which was granted by the Honorable Committee.

The Chairman Public Petition committee, Rt. Hon. Mike Etaba afterwards, summoned the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to appear before the Honorable committee on the next sitting, for a quick feedback concerning the letter they reported to have written to Benin Republic to get the actual numbers of Nigerians in Republic of Benin prison.

Comrade Igboayaka during the hearing, further recounted the ugly situation Nigerian Youths who are doing their legitimate business are facing in Republic of Benin, and urged the Committee to speed up action and rescue the innocent youths that are in excruciating agony in Republic of Benin prisons.
