Offa mayhem: Police Arrest 7 Suspects, Says 17 Dead

The Kwara State police command, on Saturday, says it has arrested seven suspects linked to the bank robbery in Offa Local Government Area of the state.

Some daredevil armed robbers had, on Thursday, raided five commercial banks along the Owode Market Area, broke bank vaults and made away with several millions of naira.

The robbers killed police officers as well as many passers-by, and injured several others.

Addressing newsmen, the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Lawan Ado said seven suspects have been arrested.

He also said that 17 persons were killed during the robbery attack, while some vehicles abandoned by the escaping hoodlums have been recovered by the police.

He said: “Seven suspects have been arrested so far.

“One suspect was arrested at Igosun, where the hoodlums abandoned seven vehicles and ran into the bush.

“The abandoned vehicles have been recovered and brought into the station and investigation is on.

“Seventeen persons were killed comprising of nine policemen, eight civilians. Five banks were attacked during the operation.”

He said, however, that the number of those injured in the attack are yet to be ascertained as they are receiving treatment in various hospitals.

ElombahNews had reported the massacre by heavily armed, daredevil robbers in Offa, Kwara state, on Thursday.

According to the report, several people were killed during the bank raid.

The robbers had seized the town by blocking roads from Ilorin and Osogbo, attacked police station, then proceeded to banks, carting away huge cash.

Some eyewitnesses declared yesterday a dark day in Offa Kwara State, after the band of bandits laid siege on the whole town.

Reports show that people were slaughtered indiscriminately without mercy.

Even the central police station was sacked and policemen and women were slaughtered just as the banks were raided.

According to eyewitnesses, the robbers reportedly rained bullets on the closest Police Station before robbing the banks.

Others said the robbers were very confident during the operation, saying that this is “mayhem of terrorism magnitude” and “inexplicable”.
