Nine members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), on Saturday, drowned in River Mayo-Selbe, located in Gashaka Local Government Area of Taraba State.

Reports show that about 22 corps members were swimming in the river during a picnic when the incident occurred.

They were reportedly swept away after the river suddenly overflowed from contributions from nearby communities due to a heavy rainfall.

Recently, ElombahNews reported that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) pledged to secure the lives and welfare of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members it plans to employ for the 2019 general elections.

To that end, INEC has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the NYSC administration.

The move is in a bid to forestall violent attacks on Corps members, the sort witnessed during the 2011 general elections which incidence claimed the lives of about 18 Corp members.

The Director General of NYSC, Brig. Gen. Suleiman Kazaure gave the assurances in Jalingo on Friday, during a working tour to the orientation camp in Taraba State, reports ThisDay.

According to Gen. Kazaure, the lives of Corp members that would work as ad-hoc staff will be adequately protected.
