In a recent high-level meeting, Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, commended the European Union (EU) for its steadfast support in fostering peace, security, and sustainable development.

The minister held discussions with Ambassador Gautier Mignot, Head of the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing critical national and regional challenges.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo outlined several strategic initiatives aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s internal security infrastructure and enhancing governance in migration management. Key among these initiatives are the decentralization of identity management systems, the expansion of electronic border (e-border) solutions, the introduction of e-visas to streamline travel processes, and the deployment of advanced measures to combat document fraud through the Central Criminal Investigation and Document Authentication System (CCIDAS).

The minister emphasized that these reforms are pivotal to ensuring robust national security while promoting ease of movement for legitimate travelers. He reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to leveraging technology and international partnerships to address complex issues such as irregular migration and transnational crimes.

In response, Ambassador Mignot reaffirmed the EU’s dedication to supporting Nigeria in its quest for enhanced security and orderly migration. He highlighted the EU’s ongoing contributions in areas such as capacity building, technical assistance, and funding for critical projects. The ambassador expressed optimism about deepening the partnership to achieve shared goals for stability and economic growth.

The meeting concluded with a mutual pledge to strengthen ties and foster innovative solutions to emerging challenges in security and migration management. Both parties underscored the importance of sustained collaboration in achieving long-term peace and prosperity for Nigeria and the broader West African region.
