Mayor beheaded just 6 days after taking office in Mexico
The mayor of a violence-plagued city in Mexico was killed on Sunday with his dismembered body left in a pickup truck and his severed head placed atop the vehicle’s roof.
Mr Alejandro Arcos, 43, was killed just six days after he took office as mayor of the city of Chilpancingo, a city of around 280,000 people in southwestern Mexico.
This shocking event follows the killing of another city official, Francisco Tapia, the new city government’s secretary, who was assassinated three days prior.
The state of Guerrero has been plagued by violence, particularly against public officials and journalists.
Notably, at least six candidates were killed in the state leading up to the June 2 elections.
Governor Evelyn Salgado of Guerrero expressed profound sorrow and indignation over the loss, stressing the need for a thorough investigation.
Similarly, Alejandro Moreno, leader of Arcos’ PRI party, condemned the murders and called for federal intervention, highlighting concerns about governance in Guerrero.
Chilpancingo, like much of Guerrero, has been grappling with escalating violence, often linked to drug cartels and organized crime.
The region remains one of the most dangerous in Mexico, with high rates of homicide and frequent attacks on public figures.
