Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), Chairman/CEO of the NDLEA, expressed gratitude to the National Assembly on January 14, 2025.

He praised the Senate and House Committees on Narcotic Drugs for their ongoing commitment to combating substance abuse and drug trafficking.

On January 13 and 14, Marwa defended the NDLEA’s 2025 budget proposal before the respective committees.

He also thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering support, emphasizing the importance of enhancing the agency’s capabilities.

“I appreciate the honorable chairman and committee members for your invaluable support throughout the 2024 fiscal year,” Marwa stated.

He acknowledged their dedication to the war against drug abuse and highlighted the importance of amending the NDLE Act.

Moreover, Marwa requested continued assistance during the appropriation process, citing significant challenges faced by commands nationwide, particularly regarding accommodation.

He emphasized that attacks on officers often stem from inadequate housing, impacting their safety and operational efficiency.

“I cannot overstate this matter, as it directly affects our personnel’s safety,” he noted.

Marwa urged the committee to prioritize the barracks project, critical for NDLEA’s success and operational integrity amidst growing demands from other agencies.

In the 2025 budget proposal, the agency was allocated N67.5 billion, with N47.1 billion designated for recurrent personnel costs.

The remaining funds cover operational expenses, including intelligence gathering, arrests, and prosecutions vital for the agency’s mission.

Marwa highlighted the need to enhance the N16 billion allocated for capital expenditure, stressing that it currently lacks provisions for ongoing barracks projects.

He argued that secure accommodation is essential for the agency’s personnel, ensuring their dedication and performance.

“The agency faces sophisticated drug cartels and inadequate infrastructure,” Marwa explained.

He outlined ongoing reforms, including constructing barracks to accommodate personnel and improve operational integrity, which is crucial for effective administration.

House Committee Chairman Hon Abass Adigun assured commitment to adequate funding for the NDLEA’s operational successes.

“This committee recognizes the NDLEA’s critical role in safeguarding our communities from narcotics,” he stated, emphasizing transparency and accountability in funding allocations.

Similarly, on January 14, Senate Committee Chairman Senator Ibrahim Dankwambo congratulated the NDLEA for its outstanding performance in 2024.

“We are proud of your achievements,” he said, assuring the agency of continued support to enhance its effectiveness in the upcoming year.
