…urges Nigerians to make sacrifices for national development

Nigeria’s Senate President, Ahmed Lawan has urged citizens to make sacrifices for national development.

Lawan who spoke to newsmen soon after the annual Sallah homage to President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday, May 2, 2022 in commemoration of this year’s Eid al-Fitr festival said through sacrifice for one another and the nation, Nigeria can become the best and most peaceful country in the world.

It is not a sheer coincidence that both the Muslims and Christians fasted almost the same time. That is to say that we as a nation and people had the opportunity to get closer to God and seek his face and intervention in our individual and national lives.

“We have learnt so many lessons that are supposed to live with us after Ramadan and after lent. Sacrifice is one of them and we are supposed to sacrifice as individuals for the sake of others and for the sake of our nation.

“This country can be the best country in the world; it can be the most peaceful country in the world but before that happens, we must see ourselves as one another’s keeper and surrender our individual comfort for the growth, development, stability and peace of our nation,” he advised.

Senator Ahmed Lawan noted that despite the interruptions caused by COVID-19, the Nigerian government has done a lot for its citizens.

As a nation and an administration, we have been interrupted by nature, when COVID struck at the end of 2019. That disrupted many of our developmental programmes and projects.

“But all the same, this administration bit the bullet and went ahead to come up with strategies, projects and programmes that ensured that we came out of recession and today we are happy to say that we are still making progress but we would have done far better if not for COVID,” he added.
