In a significant move toward youth empowerment, the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government announced scholarships for at least 20 local students.

These scholarships will allow the students to acquire essential technical skills at the Lagos State Cooperative College Technical (LASCOCO) Skill-up Acquisition Centre.

The initiative specifically focuses on training students in vocational areas such as plumbing, pipeline fittings, and industrial electrical installation.

During a recent working visit to LASCOCO, Hon. Sesan Olowa, the Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, made the announcement.

This visit aimed to assess the college’s training facilities as part of its Technical Skill-up Acquisition Vocational Training Programme.

Consequently, it demonstrates the local government’s commitment to fostering skill development among its youth.

Moreover, Hon. Olowa expressed his satisfaction with LASCOCO’s comprehensive academic and vocational training programs, especially in Cooperative and Microfinance studies.

He pointed to the success stories of previously sponsored students as proof of the institution’s ability to provide high-quality training.

Additionally, he highlighted the new technical skill-up program, which offers participants City and Guilds Certification upon completion.

According to Hon. Olowa, this scholarship program aligns with the local government’s mission to equip young residents with essential skills.

He emphasized that enhancing skills is particularly crucial in the Lekki Free Trade Zone, home to over 60 companies. This trade zone creates a growing demand for technically skilled workers who can effectively support diverse industries.

Furthermore, Hon. Olowa pledged to foster a partnership between LASCOCO and local businesses in the Lekki Free Trade Zone.

This collaboration aims to ensure the program’s sustainability while establishing a reliable pipeline of skilled workers. Ultimately, these workers will meet the technical demands of various industries within the thriving trade zone.

Through this initiative, the local government seeks to enhance job opportunities for young residents while driving economic growth.

The scholarship initiative is being implemented in collaboration with the Ade Otukomaya Foundation under the local government’s educational empowerment scheme.

It underscores Ibeju-Lekki’s commitment to addressing youth unemployment through targeted skill acquisition programmes.

During the event, Mr. Akorede Ojomu, Provost of LASCOCO, commended Hon. Olowa for his dedication to youth development and community service.

He described the Chairman’s efforts as unparalleled and expressed optimism about the programme’s impact on the local economy.

Mr. Ojomu highlighted that LASCOCO’s vocational training initiative was designed to address the shortage of skilled technicians in Nigeria.

He emphasized that many industries, especially small and medium-scale enterprises, need a workforce with standardized technical skills.

Moreover, companies located within the Lekki Free Trade Zone corridor specifically require employees who possess these essential skills.

The programme aims to reduce reliance on foreign technicians and curb the practice of sending individuals abroad for training.

By fostering local talent and enhancing technical proficiency, this initiative seeks to position Ibeju-Lekki as a hub for skilled labor, contributing to both community development and economic growth.
