A serious road accident occurred earlier today at College Bus Stop along Ikotun-Igando Road in Lagos, leaving 13 commuters injured.

The collision involved a Volkswagen-painted commercial bus, registered as KSF 364 XC, and an Acura Jeep with plate MUS 99 GN.

Preliminary investigations revealed that excessive speeding by the Acura Jeep driver caused the accident.

As a result, the driver lost control of the vehicle. Consequently, he veered off the lane and mounted the median.

Ultimately, he collided head-on with the oncoming Volkswagen bus, which was transporting passengers at that time.

The impact of the collision was devastating, resulting in severe injuries to several passengers. Victims sustained multiple fractures and other forms of trauma, highlighting the gravity of the incident.

In a swift and coordinated response, operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) arrived at the scene to rescue the injured. The team successfully evacuated 13 victims, comprising eight males and five females, from the wreckage. Their timely intervention was crucial in ensuring that all injured passengers received immediate medical attention.

To support the rescue efforts, security personnel from the Igando Police Division were actively deployed.

Their primary aim was to maintain order at the accident site.

Their presence helped prevent further disruptions and ensured a smooth emergency response operation.

Passersby played a significant role as well, assisting LASTMA officials in transporting the injured to a nearby private medical facility in Igando.

The casualties received immediate transport to the hospital for urgent treatment. This highlights the critical role of community cooperation during emergencies.

Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the General Manager of LASTMA, stressed the crucial importance of adhering to speed limits.

He noted that both private and commercial motorists must recognize the dangers associated with speeding.

Furthermore, he highlighted that reckless driving continues to be a significant contributor to road accidents. Consequently, he urged all drivers to practice caution diligently in order to prevent these tragic incidents.

Mr. Bakare-Oki also highlighted ongoing efforts by the Lagos State Government to address reckless driving through technological interventions. He noted that speed limit enforcement cameras are being deployed across strategic locations in Lagos to monitor and curb dangerous driving behaviors.

Extending his sympathies to the victims, Mr. Bakare-Oki expressed heartfelt wishes for their swift recovery. He reiterated LASTMA’s dedication to ensuring safer roads and reducing traffic-related casualties throughout Lagos State.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by excessive speeding and underscores the importance of vigilance and adherence to traffic regulations by all road users.
