Kano police spokesman receives death threats over arrest of protesters
The spokesman of Kano State police command SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa has received death threat from a social media user, Ismail Yusuf over the arrest of young protesters during the recent protests in the state.
Kiyawa had confirmed the arrest of protesters suspected of looting the NCC Industrial Park, the Kano High Court, and other locations in the state during the nationwide protests that turned chaotic.
In a Facebook post, Yusuf unleashed a barrage of attack on Kiyawa, labelling him as an “Evil Reincarnate” and accusing him of not wanting to see other children prosper.
Apart from insulting the police image maker’s parents, the social media influencer made a direct death threat, saying, “If I have the opportunity to meet you face-to-face, I will cut your life short.”
Kiyawa has always provided updates on security situations, including measures being taken by the force to tackle insecurity in Kano.
Meanwhile, Kano State Police Command has not reacted to the death threat, but sources according to PRNigria indicate that they are taking the matter seriously.
The incident highlights the growing bad blood and polarization surrounding the protests, with many fearing further violence and unrest.
The Kano State Government announced that over 632 suspects have been arraigned for vandalizing public facilities and looting during the protests.
A Mobile Court ordered the remand of 632 protesters for alleged criminal conspiracy, theft, unlawful assembly, inciting disturbance, trespass, and mischief by fire during the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest.
While speaking to newsmen, the State Attorney General, Haruna Dederi, said the State Government set up three mobile courts to prosecute the defendants, and the case diary would be studied before the next adjourned date.
