In a decisive move to end violence, Jibia LGA residents in Katsina state brokered a peace deal with armed bandits on February 28, 2025, in Kwari village.
Following years of conflict, this accord prioritizes security and reconciliation for lasting stability.
Led by Alhaji Gide Dahiru’s Jibia People’s Forum, community leaders like Alhaji Sama’ila Mai Maasara and Alhaji Haruna Sada Zare spearheaded the talks. Notably, Sheikh Ibrahim Sabi’u, a former reconciliation judge, championed dialogue as the crisis solution.
Speaking at the meeting, Sabi’u urged adherence to Islamic principles during negotiations. He stressed, “Bandits sought reconciliation—we embraced peace through Sharia, aiming to secure our people’s future sustainably.”
The peace process has seen the involvement of high-profile bandit leaders such as Audu Lankai and Tukur Nigerian.
Representatives of the Nigerian Army were also present at the meeting to support the initiative and ensure adherence to agreed-upon terms.
Key conditions outlined by Jibia residents included an immediate cessation of attacks on Jibia town and surrounding communities, as well as assurances for the safety of farmers and their farmlands. In return, the bandits committed to respecting government laws and ending criminal activities such as cattle rustling.
In a gesture of goodwill, the bandits handed over two AK-47 rifles during the meeting and admitted their involvement in the recent abduction of ten individuals from Daddara town. All ten victims have been released and are currently receiving medical attention at the General Hospital in Jibia. Alhaji Babangida Bracket, a resident of Daddara, confirmed their safe return after several days in captivity.
The peace accord marks a hopeful turning point for Jibia LGA, which has faced prolonged insecurity. Community leaders and stakeholders have expressed cautious optimism that this initiative will pave the way for sustainable peace in the region.
