The Chairman of United Progressives of Nigeria, [UPP], Chief Chekwas Okorie, popularly known as Ojeozi Ndigbo, has urged Ndigbo from all works of life to rally together to make Igbo Presidency a reality.

Chief Chekwas made the call on Sunday in a statement made available to Elombah.com.

In the statement, he expressed worry “about the narrow definition many of our intellectual class seem to give the idea of Igbo President of Nigeria.”

He further argued that since Ndigbo want restructuring of Nigeria, “a Presidential Candidate of Igbo extraction immediately becomes a rallying point to rally the multitude of Igbo people dispersed all over Nigeria and in the diaspora and other Ethnic political blocs of like mind for political action”.

He, however, decried the notion of some Igbos, especially in the diaspora who continue to look up to Western Powers for assistance.

The statement reads in full:

“I continue to worry about the narrow definition many of our intellectual class seem to give the idea of Igbo President of Nigeria.

“Let us put it this way.

“Ndigbo want restructuring of Nigeria as much as the South West, South South and some others from sections of the North.

“At the best Ndigbo want to exit from Nigeria. All of these aspirations cannot be achieved in any other way except by political means.

“No Socio – cultural Association or NGO has the capacity to prosecute, execute or negotiate any of our obviously political aspirations except a political party that is ideologically inclined to the Igbo Agenda.

“In this context therefore a Presidential Candidate of Igbo extraction immediately becomes a rallying point to rally the multitude of Igbo people dispersed all over Nigeria and in the diaspora and other Ethnic political blocs of like mind for political action.

“If we agree that armed struggle is not an option, why are we shying away from going for the highest office of Nigeria.

“We do not necessarily have to win the Presidential election to restore our lost political relevance and have an effective bargaining chip.

“I continue to appeal that we widen our perspective to our peculiar situation in Nigeria.

“The Western Powers we appear to look up to all the time will continue to treat us with disdain until we begin to be proactively political.

“I am convinced that those who do not understand me today will understand me tomorrow. God bless Ndigbo.”

Recently, the Ojeozi Ndigbo, in a video interview with Elombah.com, expressly declared that the Southeast MUST produce the next president of Nigeria come 2019 general election.

Speaking during the interview, he said that Igbos have been marginalised for far too long and that NOW is the most ripe time to fully key in to the Nigerian political project.
