Gunmen numbering about 30, according to eyewitnesses invaded the Neni community, headquarters of Anaocha local government area of Anambra State.

The hoodlums were said to have set the Divisional Police Headquarters there ablaze. They also torched the nearby Anaocha Council secretariat which stood adjacent the Divisional police Headquarters, Neni.

The criminal elements said to be very armed with assorted weapons stormed the area in the wee hours of Thursday.

They made a noisy entrance shouting, “DPO must go. He has overstayed. He has stayed in Anaocha for over 15 years.”

Another source said they whisked away some police officers including female officer at the station.

The Anaocha divisional police Headquarters according to residents of the area has become so notorious for inhuman treatment and extra judicial conducts.

They were alleged to be good at arresting citizens without any reason other than for money.

The ugly trend was alleged to be fuelled because the DPO condoned and acquiesced the misconduct.

The spokesman of Anambra State police command, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident.

He said that though the hoodlums attacked the police station with IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices) but they did not take away any arms, or whisk away any police operative.

Ikenga said gallant officers on duty successfully repelled them and forced them to flee.
