Gunmen kill 7 in Anambra, Soludo places N10m bounty for each suspects

Seven people, including five local vigilante operatives and two civilians, lost their lives in a vicious attack by gunmen in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The sad incident occurred on Monday, December 30, disrupting preparations for a burial scheduled for January 2.

NewsBand understand that the gunmen opened fire at a compound where arrangements were underway for a burial ceremony.

Among the victims were two unarmed civilians who were at the venue during the attack.

The other casualties included members of the Anambra State Vigilante Group (AVG) and security operatives stationed near the Local Government Headquarters.

The spokesman of the command in Anambra State, SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the incident.

He said that the attack started around 11:2am, with the criminal elements shooting sporadically before targeting a security observation post near the express road.

In the aftermath of the attack, the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, launched an immediate manhunt for the suspects.

During an on-the-spot assessment of the crime scene, he gathered information from eyewitnesses and assured residents that efforts were underway to bring the attackers to justice.

“The Joint Security Team managed to rescue one victim who is currently receiving treatment in the hospital,” Ikenga disclosed.

The Commissioner expressed his condolences to the families and friends of the victims, particularly the Ihiala community, and reaffirmed the police’s commitment to restoring safety and arresting those behind the wicked attack.

Moreover, the attack has left the Ihiala community in shock, with many residents calling for heightened security measures to prevent further violence.

Police has urged the public to provide any information that could assist in identifying and apprehending the gunmen, pledging to work tirelessly to ensure justice is served.

Soludo reacts, places N10m bounty for each suspects

Meanwhile, Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo has announced a N10 million bounty for information leading to the capture of each of the gunmen responsible for the attack.

During a condolence visit to the family of the late Bridget Akanma Onuchukwu in Umuike, Ubahuekwem Ihiala, Soludo expressed his deep sorrow over the tragedy that resulted in the unfortunate deaths of seven individuals.

While speaking at the event, Governor Soludo extended his heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the victims and reassured the community that those responsible for this violent act would be brought to justice.

“We will not rest until the perpetrators of this heinous crime are apprehended. All of them will pay for it” he stated.

“We are on their trail as we speak. Anybody that will avail us information that will lead to their arrest will be appreciated. Ihiala security is currently being discussed and will be unveiled soon, “the Governor added.
