Niamey, Niger – Alassane Souleymane, the former CEO of the Office des Produits Vivriers du Niger (OPVN), has made a public appeal. He seeks assistance from Nigerien authorities to secure his release from captivity.
Since January 11, 2025, Souleymane has been held hostage by the al-Qaeda-affiliated group Jama’a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin (JNIM).
Consequently, his situation remains dire, prompting his urgent plea for help.
On February 12, 2025, Souleymane released a video confirming his identity and explaining the circumstances of his abduction.
In the video, he appeared composed and assured viewers of his good health despite the ordeal.
Furthermore, he expressed a heartfelt plea for prompt action, emphasizing his desire to reunite with his family.
“My name is Mr. Anassar Suleiman.
“I was born in 1964 in Karachi Sud, Tawa, Niger,” he stated. Since then, various experiences have significantly shaped his life and perspective.
Consequently, he explained, “I have been held by the men of the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims since January 11, 2025.”
Despite the circumstances, he remains hopeful for a resolution.
Currently, he expressed, “I am doing very, very well.” Moreover, he sincerely hopes that the Nigerien authorities will intervene for his release. Ultimately, he desires to quickly reunite with his family.
Thank you,” Souleymane stated in the video.
The circumstances surrounding his abduction remain unclear, and JNIM has not publicly disclosed any demands or conditions for his release.
The militant group, primarily active in the Sahel region, targets government officials, foreign nationals, and civilians to destabilize local governments. Consequently, this strategy aims to expand the group’s influence across the area.
Currently, the ruling military government of Niger, known as the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP), has not issued an official response.
Furthermore, the CNSP’s silence raises concerns about their awareness of the situation.
Since taking power in a coup in 2023, the CNSP has not indicated whether any negotiations are ongoing.
Additionally, they have not revealed their intentions regarding necessary actions related to Souleymane’s circumstances.
The hostage’s appeal comes at a time of heightened security challenges in Niger and the broader Sahel region.
The area has faced escalating violence from extremist groups, leading to urgent calls for stronger regional cooperation.
Consequently, there is a growing demand for international support to effectively combat terrorism in the region.
Souleymane’s abduction highlights the ongoing risks faced by public officials and civilians in conflict zones.
His family, colleagues, and supporters are anxiously awaiting news of efforts to secure his safe return.
Authorities have yet to comment on the video or provide updates on potential measures being taken to address the situation.
The international community will be closely monitoring developments as Niger navigates this delicate and urgent matter.
