Fire has gutted a portion of the building that houses the Dunukofia local government area administration in Ukpo, Dunukofia, Anambra State.

The inferno which broke out on Wednesday night was reportedly caused by bush burning near the local government building.

Mr Frank Okolie, a resident of the area said the fire lasted hours, adding that it would have destroyed a lot of property in the secretariat but for the timely intervention of firefighters from the Anambra State Fire Service.

Meanwhile, Engr. Martin Agbili, Anambra State Fire Chief, who confirmed the development said, “At about 1853hrs (6.53pm) of Wednesday, 07-02-2024, Anambra State Fire Service, received a distress call of a heavy fire outbreak at Dunukofia.”

He said a fire truck and Firefighters were drafted to the scene to put the situation under control.

Agbili added that during the firefighting operation, they were able to control and extinguish the fire and prevent it from destroying a lot of things at the local government secretariat.

“We withdrew from the fire scene at about 2030hrs (8.30pm) after fighting the fire to standstill and calming the situation.

“It is important that we clear all bushes around our environment, especially at this dry season and harmattan. Fire kills but you can prevent it,” he added.
