The federal government generously contributed N30 million to the family of Taiwo Akinkunmi, the esteemed designer of the Nigerian flag.
Akinkunmi, renowned for his iconic design, passed away on August 30, 2023, at the age of 87 after a brief illness.
Following his death, President Bola Tinubu promptly dispatched a delegation led by Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, to offer condolences to Akinkunmi’s family in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.
During this visit, the minister conveyed that Tinubu committed to arranging a national burial for Akinkunmi while also providing financial assistance to his family.
Despite the promise of a state burial, Akinkunmi was ultimately laid to rest on September 6, 2024, a year after his passing, as his family awaited the anticipated arrangements.
On Thursday, Lanre Issa-Onilu, the Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), presented a N30 million cheque in Ibadan.
He was accompanied by Olukemi Afolayan, the Oyo State director of the agency, who facilitated the presentation.
Issa-Onilu emphasized that the donation aimed to support Akinkunmi’s family and honor his significant contributions to the nation.
“This N30 million donation to the family of our renowned flag designer is not a payment for his services, but rather a gesture of appreciation for his impact on our country,” Issa-Onilu stated.
In response, Akinwunmi Akinkunmi, one of the deceased’s sons, expressed heartfelt gratitude to President Tinubu for this thoughtful gesture.
